Tutorial: Creating Your First Dashboard

Tutorial: Creating Your First Dashboard

This guide will walk you through building your first visual insight using our Pie Chart widget. We’ll transform raw form entries into a clear, professional data visualization in just five steps.

Prerequisites

  • A published Form Synced to Distill with at least a few submitted entries.
  • Access to the Dashboards section in your web portal.

Step 1: Add the Pie Chart to the Canvas

Open the Dashboard Designer to a blank project.

  1. Locate the Library on the left-hand side of the Designer Canvas.
  2. Click and drag the Pie Chart icon onto the central Designer Canvas.
  3. You will see a placeholder chart appear, ready for configuration.

Step 2: Set Up Your Basic Details

With the Pie Chart selected on the canvas, look at the Properties Panel on the right. Under the Basic section, define the “identity” of your chart:

  • Title: Enter a descriptive name, such as “Orders Status”
  • Title Style: Adjust the font size or color to match your preference or brand.
  • Hint: Add a brief explanation that appears below the title, like “Proportion of orders by status.”

Step 3: Connect Your Data

This is where you define the logic for your visualization. Navigate to the Dataset tab in the Properties Panel to link your form data:

  • Table: Select the specific form table from which you want to pull data.
  • Filtering: Add criteria to view only specific records (e.g., Amount > 100Status = "Active").
  • Group By: Choose the column that will define your “slices,” such as Department or Category.
  • Metric: Select how the slices are calculated, such as a Count of IDs to show the total volume of entries.

Step 4: Fine-Tune the Layout and Style

Switch to the Layout & Styling section to polish the visuals and make the data “pop”:

  • Chart Style: Choose between a standard Pie or a Doughnut style for a more modern look.
  • Color Palette: Pick a color scheme that makes the different slices easy to distinguish at a glance.
  • Show Legend: Toggle this On so viewers can see which color represents which category.
  • Data Labels: Enable these if you want the exact values or percentages displayed directly on the slices.

Step 5: Preview and Save

Before finalizing your work, ensure the data tells the story you intended.

  1. Click the Preview button in the top toolbar to see how the chart looks with live data.
  2. If everything looks correct, click Save.
  3. Publish your dashboard to generate a Share Key for your stakeholders.
